conscious
Alert and knowing
Conscious means awake and aware—able to perceive and respond to surroundings.
An unconscious person lacks this awareness; a conscious one has it.
The word extends to deliberate attention: a conscious effort, a conscious decision.
To be conscious of something is to notice or consider it: She was conscious of being watched.
Self-conscious describes heightened awareness of oneself, often uncomfortably so.
