referred pain

Mislocated bodily sensation

Referred pain is pain felt in a part of the body other than its actual source.

The classic example is a heart attack causing pain in the left arm, jaw, or shoulder rather than the chest.

This happens because nerves from different body regions converge on the same pathways to the brain, which misinterprets the signal's origin: The pain in his shoulder turned out to be referred pain from his gallbladder.
