redox reaction

Electron transfer process

A redox reaction is a chemical reaction involving the transfer of electrons between substances—one loses electrons (oxidation) while another gains them (reduction).

The two processes always occur together, hence the portmanteau of reduction-oxidation.

Rusting, combustion, and cellular respiration are all redox reactions.

Batteries generate electricity through redox reactions.
