red tide
Harmful algal bloom
Red tide is a harmful algal bloom that discolors coastal waters, typically reddish-brown, caused by rapid multiplication of certain microscopic organisms.
These blooms can produce toxins that kill fish, contaminate shellfish, and cause respiratory irritation in humans along affected beaches: The red tide closed the beach for two weeks.
Despite the name, red tides aren't always red and have nothing to do with tides.
