oyster reef
Bivalve bed structure
An oyster reef is a dense, elevated structure formed by oysters growing on top of one another over generations, creating a rocky mass of living and dead shells.
These reefs provide critical marine habitat, filter water, and protect coastlines from erosion.
Unlike coral reefs, oyster reefs form in brackish and temperate waters: The oyster reef in the bay has been restored after decades of overharvesting.
