cryptosporidium

Waterborne intestinal parasite

Cryptosporidium is a genus of microscopic parasites that infect the intestinal tract of humans and animals, causing the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis.

The parasites spread through contaminated water and are notoriously resistant to chlorine, making them a persistent threat in drinking water and swimming pools: The outbreak was traced to cryptosporidium in the municipal water supply.

Often shortened to crypto in medical contexts.
