metropolitan area
City and surroundings
A metropolitan area is a major city together with its surrounding suburbs and smaller communities that form an economically and socially integrated region.
The boundaries typically extend well beyond the city proper to include places where residents commute to the central city for work: The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area spans thirteen counties.
Often shortened to metro area or just metro.
