tallgrass prairie

Vanishing American savanna

Tallgrass prairie is the grassland ecosystem native to the central United States, characterized by grasses that grow several feet high—big bluestem, switchgrass, Indian grass.

Once covering vast stretches from Texas to Minnesota, most has been converted to farmland; only scattered remnants survive.

The Flint Hills of Kansas contain the largest remaining tallgrass prairie.
