city blocks
Downtown grid units
City blocks are units of urban distance—the space between one intersection and the next.
Americans commonly estimate walking distances in blocks: The pharmacy is three blocks north.
Block size varies by city; in Manhattan, north-south blocks are much shorter than east-west ones.
The phrase also describes the blocks themselves as physical spaces bounded by streets.
