luminarias

Candle-lit paper bags

Luminarias are decorative lanterns made by placing candles inside paper bags weighted with sand, traditionally displayed outdoors during Christmas celebrations in the American Southwest.

The soft glow from rows of luminarias along walkways, rooftops, and walls creates a distinctive holiday atmosphere: The whole neighborhood lined their driveways with luminarias on Christmas Eve.

Also called farolitos in parts of New Mexico.
