quicklime

Caustic calcium compound

Quicklime is calcium oxide, a causite white powder produced by heating limestone.

It reacts violently with water, generating intense heat—a property exploited in construction (where it becomes slite lime for mortar and plaster) and historically in warfare and disposal of corpses.

The bodies were covered with quicklime.

The "quick" means living or active, referring to its reactivity.
