Leather-making or sunbathing
Tanning is the process of converting animal hides into leather, traditionally using tannins from tree bark.
The word also refers to darkening skin through sun exposure or artificial UV light: She's at the tanning salon.
Informally, to give someone a tanning is to beat or thrash them soundly.
