limewash

Historic white coating

Limewash is a paint made from slite (calcium hydroxide) mixed with water, used for centuries to coat walls, fences, and tree trunks.

It produces a chalky, matte finish that weathers naturally and allows surfaces to breathe.

Unlike modern paints, limewash bonds chemically with masonry rather than forming a film: The old farmhouse had been limewashed white.

To limewash is to apply this coating.
