prestressing

Tensioning before loading

Prestressing is a construction technique where internal stresses are deliberately introduced into concrete or other materials before they bear loads.

Steel cables or rods are tensioned and embedded in concrete; when released, their compression strengthens the material against cracking under weight.

Prestressed concrete appears in bridges, parking structures, and floor slabs: The prestressing allowed for longer spans without support columns.
