pavements

Hard urban surfaces

Pavements are paved surfaces, particularly those designed for walking or driving.

In British English, pavement specifically means a sidewalk—the paved path alongside a road where pedestrians walk.

In American English, pavement more broadly refers to any hard-surfaced area, especially roads: The hot pavement shimmered in the summer heat.

To pound the pavement means to walk extensively, usually in search of work or customers.
