national forest
Government-managed timberland
A national forest is a large area of woodland owned and managed by a country's government, typically for conservation, sustainable logging, and public recreation.
In the United States, national forests are administered by the Forest Service and differ from national parks in allowing more commercial activity like timber harvesting and mining: We went hiking in the national forest last weekend. (Capitalized National Forest appears in official names of specific forests.)
