madras
Bright plaid cloth
Madras is a lightweight cotton fabric, typically woven with colorful plaid or checked patterns.
Originally from India, it's popular for summer clothing—shirts, shorts, and jackets—because it breathes well in hot weather: a madras sport coat, madras plaid shorts.
The fabric's dyes traditionally bleed when washed, creating a softer, more muted effect over time. (Capitalized Madras is the former name of Chennai, India.)
