preclusion

Prevention before occurrence

Preclusion is the act of preventing something from happening or making it impossible.

In legal contexts, it refers to barring a party from raising certain claims or arguments, often because they were already decided: The doctrine of issue preclusion prevents relitigating settled matters.

More generally, one thing precludes another by ruling it out: His injury meant the preclusion of any hope of competing.
