collateral estoppel
Issue preclusion doctrine
Collateral estoppel is a legal doctrine preventing a party from relitigating an issue already decided against them in a previous case.
Once a court has resolved a specific factual or legal question, that determination binds the same parties in future lawsuits involving different claims: The defendant invoked collateral estoppel to block the plaintiff from re-arguing negligence.
Also called issue preclusion.
