prairie dogs

Grassland colony dwellers

Prairie dogs are burrowing rodents native to the grasslands of North America, named for their habitat and their distinctive bark-like warning calls.

These highly social animals live in elaborate underground tunnel systems called towns, which can span hundreds of acres and house thousands of individuals.

Despite the name, they're not dogs at all but members of the squirrel family.

The prairie dogs popped up from their burrows to survey the field.
