lentivirus

HIV's viral family

A lentivirus is a type of retrovirus characterized by a long incubation period before symptoms appear—the name comes from Latin for "slow." HIV is the most well-known lentivirus.

These viruses can integrate their genetic material into host cell DNA, making them useful tools in gene therapy for delivering genetic modifications to cells.
