tailcoat
Tuxedo's formal cousin
A tailcoat is a formal jacket cut short at the front and extending into long tapering tails at the back.
It's the most formal evening wear for men, worn with white tie: The conductor appeared in tails.
The plural tails often serves as shorthand for the complete outfit.
Morning coats, cut similarly but less dramatically, are the daytime equivalent.
