Galapagos tortoise
Enormous island reptile
A Galapagos tortoise is a giant tortoise native to the Galápagos Islands, the largest living species of tortoise.
These reptiles can weigh over 400 pounds and live well past 100 years.
Their shells vary by island population—domed on wetter islands with abundant vegetation, saddlebacked on drier islands where tortoises must reach higher for food.
Darwin's observations of these variations contributed to his theory of evolution.
