pit pony

Underground coal hauler

A pit pony was a small horse used to haul coal carts through mine tunnels.

These animals spent most of their lives underground, often going blind from the darkness.

The practice was common in British and American coal mines from the mid-1800s until mechanization made them obsolete in the twentieth century.

The last pit ponies were retired from British mines in 1999.
