colophony
Pine tree extract
Colophony is the hard, amber-colored resin left after distilling turpentine from pine sap.
Musicians rub it on bow strings to create friction against violin or cello strings.
It also appears in adhesives, varnishes, and soldering flux.
The more common name is rosin.
