pilot whale

Melon-headed ocean mammal

Pilot whales are large, dark-colored dolphins with bulbous foreheads, found in oceans worldwide.

They travel in tight-knit pods, often following a leader—hence the name, as if being "piloted." There are two species: long-finned and short-finned.

Pilot whales are among the species most prone to mass strandings.
