flying fox

Large tropical bat

A flying fox is a large fruit-eating bat native to tropical regions of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands.

Unlike smaller bats, flying foxes navigate by sight rather than echolocation, and their fox-like faces give them their name.

The term also refers to a zip line or aerial ropeway: The kids rode the flying fox across the gorge.
