blacklegs

Workers crossing pickets

Blacklegs has two main meanings.

In labor disputes, blacklegs are workers who continue working during a strike or who replace striking workers—scabs: The union members jeered at the blacklegs crossing the picket line.

The term is primarily British.

Separately, blackleg is an acute bacterial disease affecting cattle and sheep, causing swelling and tissue death in the legs and other muscles.
