peccaries

Pig-like forest mammals

Peccaries are pig-like mammals native to the Americas, ranging from the southwestern United States through South America.

Though they resemble wild boars, peccaries belong to a different family and are smaller, with straight tusks and a scent gland on the back.

They travel in herds and can be aggressive when threatened.

The singular is peccary.
