Asian elephants
India's largest mammals
Asian elephants are the smaller of the two elephant species, native to South and Southeast Asia.
They have smaller ears than African elephants, a more rounded back, and only males typically grow large tusks.
Historically used as working animals and in religious ceremonies, they remain culturally significant across their range: Asian elephants are endangered due to habitat loss.
