amazon

Tall, fierce woman

An amazon is a tall, strong, athletic woman.

The word comes from Greek myths about a nation of female warriors who supposedly lived at the edges of the known world.

In modern use, calling someone an amazon emphasizes her physical stature and strength, sometimes admiringly, sometimes with an edge of intimidation: She was an amazon of a woman, towering over everyone in the room. (Capitalized Amazon is the river, rainforest region, or the company.)
