understory

Beneath the canopy

The understory is the layer of vegetation beneath the main canopy of a forest—shrubs, small trees, and shade-tolerant plants growing in the filtered light below the treetops.

Ferns and saplings dominated the understory.

The term extends metaphorically to anything existing beneath a more prominent layer: the understory of a narrative, the understory of a community.
