Amazon rainforest
South American jungle
The Amazon rainforest is the world's largest tropical rainforest, covering much of the Amazon River basin in South America—primarily Brazil, but extending into eight other countries.
It contains roughly ten percent of all species on Earth and produces a significant portion of the planet's oxygen, earning it the nickname "lungs of the Earth." Deforestation of the Amazon has become a major environmental concern: The Amazon rainforest is shrinking at an alarming rate.
