black rhinos
Horned African browsers
Black rhinos are a species of rhinoceros native to eastern and southern Africa, distinguished from white rhinos by their pointed, prehensile upper lip adapted for browsing on shrubs and trees rather than grazing on grass.
Despite the name, black rhinos are not actually black—both species are grayish—and the color distinction likely arose from mistranslation or mud-caked hides.
They are critically endangered due to poaching for their horns.
Conservation efforts have slowly increased black rhino populations in protected reserves.
