passion play

Easter theatrical tradition

A passion play is a dramatic performance depicting the suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, traditionally staged during Lent or Easter.

The most famous is performed every ten years at Oberammergau, Germany.

By extension, any situation involving conspicuous suffering or martyrdom may be called a passion play: His resignation speech turned into a passion play.
