Ashura

Tenth of Muharram

Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.

For Sunni Muslims, it commemorates Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt and is traditionally a day of fasting.

For Shia Muslims, it marks the martyrdom of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE—an event of profound religious significance observed through mourning rituals, processions, and sometimes self-flagellation.
