parotitis
Swollen salivary gland
Parotitis is inflammation of the parotid glands—the salivary glands located just in front of each ear.
Mumps is the most familiar cause, though bacterial infections and blocked salivary ducts can also trigger it.
The swelling produces the characteristic "chipmunk cheeks" appearance: The child was diagnosed with viral parotitis.
