thyroiditis

Inflamed neck gland

Thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid gland, the butterfly-shaped organ in the neck that regulates metabolism.

It can cause the gland to release too much or too little hormone, producing symptoms ranging from fatigue and weight changes to neck pain and swelling.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune form, is among the most common causes of hypothyroidism.
