sidewheeler

Paddle-driven steamboat

A sidewheeler is a steamboat propelled by paddle wheels mounted on its sides rather than at the stern.

These vessels dominated American river traffic in the 19th century, particularly on the Mississippi: The sidewheeler churned upstream toward St. Louis.

The design offered stability in shallow waters but made the boats wider and more vulnerable to damage.
