outer planet

Beyond the asteroids

An outer planet is one whose orbit lies beyond the asteroid belt—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in our solar system.

These gas and ice giants contrast with the inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars), which are smaller and rockier.

The term sometimes includes dwarf planets like Pluto in the outer reaches of the solar system.
