inner planet

Rocky solar neighbor

An inner planet is one of the four planets in our solar system that orbit closest to the sun—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.

These are rocky, terrestrial planets, distinguished from the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune), which are gas giants.

The asteroid belt marks the rough boundary between them.
