pull start
Tug to ignite
A pull start is a recoil mechanism for starting small engines—lawn mowers, chainsaws, outboard motors.
You yank a cord wound around a spring-loaded pulley, which spins the crankshaft to ignite the engine.
The cord then retracts automatically.
As a verb, to pull-start is to start an engine this way: I had to pull-start the generator three times before it caught.
