boarding house
Shared residential lodging
A boarding house is a residence where paying guests rent rooms and receive meals, typically sharing common areas with other lodgers.
Unlike hotels, boarding houses traditionally offered longer-term accommodation at lower rates, often serving workers, students, or travelers.
The arrangement was common before apartments became widespread: She found a room at a boarding house near the factory.
Also spelled as one word: boardinghouse.
