orientate

Get one's bearings

Orientate means to orient—to determine one's position relative to surroundings, or to align something toward a particular direction or purpose.

It took me a moment to orientate myself in the unfamiliar city.

The word is more common in British English; Americans generally prefer orient, and some consider orientate redundant or unnecessarily long.
