familiarize

Learn the ropes

To familiarize is to make familiar—to acquaint someone with something new or unfamiliar.

You familiarize yourself with a subject by studying it, or familiarize others by introducing them to it: Take some time to familiarize yourself with the software before the training session.

The reflexive form dominates: people familiarize themselves with things rather than being familiarized by others.
