orienting

Getting one's bearings

Orienting is positioning something in relation to surroundings or circumstances.

You might spend time orienting yourself in a new city, getting your bearings.

Orienting a map means aligning it with the terrain.

The word extends to mental adjustment: The first week was spent orienting new employees to company procedures.

To orient is to face east, from which orienting derives its directional sense.
