columella

Shell's inner post

A columella is a small column-like structure in anatomy or biology.

In mammals, it's the central bony pillar of the cochlea in the inner ear.

In birds and reptiles, it's a single bone transmitting sound vibrations—equivalent to the three tiny bones in the mammalian middle ear.

In snails, it's the central axis around which the shell spirals.
