snapline

Carpenter's chalk cord

A snapline is a tool for marking straight lines on surfaces, consisting of a string coated with chalk or pigment wound on a reel.

You stretch the line taut between two points, then snap it against the surface to leave a perfectly straight mark: He used a snapline to mark where the drywall would go.

Also called a chalk line.

In design software, a snapline is a guide that elements automatically align to when dragged nearby.
