moonshiners
Backwoods liquor makers
Moonshiners are people who make moonshine—illegally distilled liquor, typically whiskey.
The term evokes Appalachian tradition, where homemade spirits were produced in secret stills, often at night to avoid detection: Revenue agents raided the moonshiners' operation in the hills.
The word can also describe anyone producing alcohol outside legal channels.
