moonshining
Backwoods liquor making
Moonshining is the illicit distillation of liquor, especially whiskey, typically done at night to avoid detection—hence the moon.
The term evokes rural Appalachian tradition, where homemade corn whiskey was produced to evade taxes or prohibition laws.
By extension, moonshining can describe any covert, under-the-table operation: He's been moonshining auto parts out of his garage.
